2009 Toyota Venza

Toyota unveiled the all-new 2009 Toyota Venza crossover sedan at a press conference at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Venza will raise the crossover vehicle to new levels by combining a unique blend of sedan refinement and sport utility vehicle (SUV) functionality.

"The all-new Toyota Venza was developed as a vehicle that combines the styling, comfort and fun-to-drive performance elements of a five-passenger sedan with the surprising utility of an SUV," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. "This winning combination will be ideal for active 'boomers' and young couples with small families."

All aspects of Venza's engineering and design were targeted specifically for the North American market where it will be sold exclusively. Venza was primarily engineered at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., and designed at Toyota's Calty design studios in Newport Beach, Calif. and Ann Arbor, Mich. Venza will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), in Georgetown, Ky.

The development focus of the Venza design team was to create a new crossover vehicle that shifted away from the more traditional SUV styling themes that tend to dominate the segment. Calty designers leaned more heavily on a sleek sedan concept with a wide stance that featured a sporty exterior and premium comfort interior but would also be equipped with important SUV attributes such as cargo space, towing capability and all-wheel-drive performance.

The exterior design of the four-door Venza begins with an imposing front end featuring a distinctive grille, headlights and fog lamps for an aggressive, yet classy appearance. The front conforms to a sleek and aerodynamic shape with short overhangs, crisp character lines and a roofline and ground clearance that are lower than a typical crossover. From behind, Venza's refined appearance is complete with an angled rear hatch, rear spoiler and wide wraparound tail lights that interconnect with the hatch door.

On the inside, Calty designers and TTC engineers made comfort, refinement and utility a priority for the five-passenger Venza. A lower rocker design will allow occupants to more easily step in and out of the vehicle than a typical sedan. Venza will also feature a higher ride height and hip points that will help provide significantly better driver visibility than most sedans and easier ingress and egress than most SUVs.

Venza will feature a spacious interior providing ample room for all five passengers and abundant SUV-like cargo space behind the second row of seats. The rear hatch provides a low cargo height that allows for easy loading and unloading of luggage and outdoor gear. Easy-to-use levers, one on each side of the rear cargo area, allow the 60/40 split rear seats to fold flat, providing additional storage space for extra long items such as surf boards, skis, camping gear and gardening equipment. For added passenger comfort, the rear seats recline up to 14 degrees.

A creative interior design complemented with an array of comfort and convenience features provides Venza with a refined look and feel that is commonly reserved for a luxury sedan. The flow of the instrumentation panel (IP) creates a unique 60/60 design that gives both driver and front passenger the look and feeling that 60 percent of the IP is accessible from their seating position.

An extra long center console extends from the IP and slopes down to a center compartment with a unique sliding console cover. Sliding open the compartment lid reveals a large storage well deep enough to hold a large purse. The compartment is also illuminated and equipped with an auxiliary audio jack and 12-volt power point. The upper portion of the center console houses the gear-shift lever for easy and comfortable driver access. Climate control functions are centrally located on the upper center console, providing easy accessibility for both driver and passenger. The center console also contains an iPod/MP3 storage compartment with wire management and illuminated dual cupholders.

All Toyota Venza models will be equipped with an array of standard features including auto dual zone air conditioning, AM/FM six-disc CD, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, remote keyless entry, electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, a multi-information display, cruise control, optitron gauges, rear wiper, privacy glass, and much more. On V6 models Toyota Venza will come standard with dual exhaust tips and will be the first Toyota model to ride on standard 20-inch alloy wheels. Four-cylinder models will come standard with 19-inch alloy wheels.

Chrome accents throughout give Venza a refined look and feel. Models equipped with an optional leather-trimmed interior will feature wood-grain-type trim and seats stitched with dark piping that is tastefully coordinated with Venza's standard linear grain dashboard and steering wheel. An array of storage space will be available throughout the vehicle to accommodate passenger belongings. A large storage compartment with an additional 12-volt power point located on the passenger side of the front center console will be sizeable enough to contain maps and magazines.

A panoramic roof will be offered as an option and will be a first for the Toyota vehicle lineup. The roof will feature separate glass panels over the front and rear seats. The front glass panel will have a power tilt/slide function.

Toyota Venza will also offer an Automatic High Beam headlight system, another Toyota first. When high beam headlights are in use sensors in the Automatic High Beam system will detect oncoming traffic and automatically switch the headlights to low-beam. When the Automatic High Beam sensors no longer detect oncoming traffic the system will switch the headlights back to high-beam mode.

Additional optional equipment will include a navigation system equipped with a JBL audio system, integrated satellite radio capability and Bluetooth® technology; a premium JBL audio system with AM/FM six-disc CD changer, satellite radio capability and Bluetooth®, rear seat entertainment system, a Smart Key System, back-up camera and a power rear door.

The sleek and sporty styling, refined interior and outstanding utility features are complemented with fun-to-drive performance attributes expected by owners with active lifestyles. Aggressive handling typically found in a performance coupe is well-balanced by the on-road comfort of an upscale sedan.

Toyota Venza will be available in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. It will provide drivers and passengers the best of both worlds by delivering the quiet comfortable ride expected from a full-size sedan along with the peace-of-mind that comes with all-wheel-drive.

Power will be generated by an available 3.5-liter V6 that will produce 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 246 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,700 rpm with a towing capability of 3,500 pounds. Standard power will come from an all-new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that will deliver capable performance and provide excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions. Both engines will be mated with a six-speed sequential-shift electronically-controlled automatic transmission.

Toyota Venza will be equipped with a comprehensive list of standard safety features. It will provide a total of seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag, front seat-mounted side airbags, and side curtain airbags for both rows of seats. Venza will also be the first sedan with Toyota's STAR safety system, featuring anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and vehicle stability control. Venza will also feature active head rests as standard equipment.

"Venza will establish an exciting new crossover niche that will combine the finest attributes of Toyota's diverse vehicle lineup," said Carter. "It will cater to buyers who are looking for the value and reliability of a Camry, the comfort and upscale refinement of an Avalon, and the utility and functionality of a Highlander SUV in one very stylish and sporty package."

"When it goes on sale in late 2008, the Venza crossover sedan will represent Toyota's latest commitment to driving change in the marketplace."

2009 Toyota Urban Cruiser

The new Toyota Urban Cruiser is designed to meet a growing demand for vehicles that are cut out for life on urban roads, yet are equally at home off the beaten track. It is compact for easy town driving and parking and, thanks to new Toyota technology, has a small carbon footprint - key requirements for today's urban motorists.

The timing is perfect for the world premiere of the Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D with all-wheel drive at the Salon de l'Automobile in Paris, following on from the design preview revealed in Geneva earlier this year.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Chief Engineer Kosuke Shibahara explains: "With class-leading low emissions, Urban Cruiser provides an ideal solution to the growing customer demand for flexible, yet socially responsible vehicles. It represents a new form of recreation vehicle, with a distinctive personality and responsible all-wheel drive performance. With many countries starting to introduce CO2-based taxation on vehicles, there has never been a better time to launch an urban car that's enjoyable to drive, both in and out of the city, with exceptionally low CO2 emissions."

Toyota Urban Cruiser will go on sale in the UK in May 2009 in two versions: a 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrol model with two-wheel drive and a 1.4 D-4D diesel with all-wheel drive. The sales mix in the UK is expected to be 70 per cent petrol, 30 per cent diesel.

DESIGN

The 2008 Paris motor show reveals Toyota Urban Cruiser's interior design for the first time, a concept created by ED2, Toyota's design studio in the South of France.

A key element is a unique radar screen-style instrument design. Centred directly in front of the driver, a concentric dial features both the speedometer and tachometer needles within the same circle. Combining the meters in this way allows more room on either side of the console for easy-to-read indicators, such as the drive monitor and shift indicator lamp.

A further innovation is the silver centre cluster, with a series of curves that make it appear to float above the centre console.

The cockpit has a silver-accented sporty design that is carried through to the design of the seats. Attention to detail is evident throughout the cabin, particularly in the surface quality of the trim materials.

Although Toyota Urban Cruiser is compact at 3,930mm long and 1,725mm wide, clever packaging ensures generous interior space. There is plenty of room inside for five passengers, with ample luggage space. Side-by-side shoulder room is generous and the front-to-rear seat spacing means there is comfortable leg room for those sitting in the back. A long, 2,460mm wheelbase and short overhangs allow interior space to be maximised. Cargo capacity is a class-leading 314 litres, extending to 749 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Toyota Urban Cruiser has a rugged, muscular appearance, but is compact and has all the practicality of a modern five-door car. Overall height is low at 1,540mm, but a high hip-point gives a commanding driving position. The rear seats can be split-folded 60:40. Those on the 2WD version have an Easy Flat seating system, with easy slide, recline and fold mechanism, similar to that on the Toyota RAV4, while the AWD model has reclining rear seats with a double fold-down feature.

The front-end styling features a large upper grille and black underguard to create a tough, sporty look, while headlamp units that reach out and around the wings emphasise dynamic, individual styling. The short body and wide track (1,485mm front, 1,490mm rear) give a robust stance, accentuated by large, 16-inch wheels. Strength and security are further expressed in strong character lines along the side and powerful wheelarch styling.

From the rear, the low profile body is wide and stable and features a wide-visibility window that wraps around to the sides of the vehicle. The large rear light clusters also extend around the tail, while an aerodynamic rear spoiler rounds off the design.

POWERTRAINS

The new 'Toyota Optimal Drive' philosophy has been introduced to the Toyota Urban Cruiser with a clear focus on minimising impact on the environment while maximising driving pleasure through the increase of power and torque.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser benefits from the latest application of the Toyota Optimal Drive philosophy and will be launched with a choice of two clean and fuel efficient engines: a re-engineered 1.4-litre D-4D diesel and a new 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine with a Stop & Start system. Both use a new six-speed manual transmission design to give both driving pleasure and class-leading fuel efficiency.

The 1.4 D-4D is fitted as standard with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and all-wheel drive. The engine produces a maximum 89bhp (90 DIN hp) with maximum torque of 205Nm available between 1,800 and 2,800rpm. Carbon dioxide emissions (provisional and subject to final homologation) are 133g/km - a new world low for this type of car.

An all-new and ultra-efficient 1.3 Dual VVT-i petrol unit is also available, exclusively with 2WD. Dual VVT-i helps achieve an optimum balance of power and torque with excellent fuel efficiency. The engine has a small bore/long stroke design with a narrow block, helping reduce weight and space. The piston has a reduced contact area for lower friction and the engine has the highest compression ratio of any vehicle running on 95 RON fuel. Maximum output is 99bhp (100 DIN hp) and maximum torque of 132Nm is produced at 3,800rpm.

Toyota Urban Cruiser marks the introduction of Toyota's new Stop & Start system, provided as standard on the 1.33 Dual VVT-i engine. This improves fuel efficiency and emissions performance by switching off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, in neutral and the driver takes his or her foot off the clutch pedal. Applying the clutch to select a gear again automatically restarts the engine. This is done momentarily with no delay in power transmission and very quietly making it almost unnoticeable to the driver or passengers. Carbon dioxide emissions (provisional and subject to final homologation) are 130g/km.

A new six-speed manual transmission has been developed, supporting a strong balance of environmental performance and power output while also giving improved shift feel for smooth, satisfying gear changes.

Toyota Urban Cruiser uses the same Active Torque Control AWD system as RAV4. This optimises traction as well as fuel efficiency by managing torque distribution to the rear wheels. In normal road conditions, drive is through the front wheels, but on loose or slippery surfaces the system instantly directs power to the rear wheels to improve stability.

The front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension give dynamic handling performance with a high degree of ride comfort. The suspension has been specifically tuned to suit European conditions, with extensive trials in cities and on mountain roads and motorways.

Top class linear driving performance and handling stability are achieved through a combination of the compact body, large diameter wheels and high performance electric power steering.

SAFETY

Toyota Urban Cruiser is provided with comprehensive active and passive safety technology that is unmatched in the Mini-SUV segment.

The body structure has excellent impact energy absorption and distribution from the front, sides and rear thanks to Toyota's Minimal Intrusion Cabin System. The bonnet and bumper construction have an energy-absorbing structure that helps improve pedestrian protection, making impact force as low as possible. Class leading seven airbags, including curtain shields and a driver's knee airbag, are fitted as standard and active head restraints reduce the risk of whiplash injury.

Active safety features include ABS with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRC) is also standard.
