Toyota Optimal Drive: Maximizing the power to minimize CO2 emissions and fuel consumption

Increasingly, vehicles are facing pressure to improve its environmental performance. Leading the way forward, the 2009 Toyota RAV4 will benefit from Toyota Optimal Drive, a set of technologies introduced in the 2008 Paris Salon to strengthen the management of Toyota in sustainable mobility.

Once the leadership with Hybrid Synergy Drive ®, Toyota introduced the Toyota optimal unit for petrol and diesel powertrains. The concept is simple - to maximize performance, while reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Toyota unit is designed for optimum:
Increasing fuel efficiency and lower CO2
Do not compromise on driving pleasure
Reduce harmful emissions
Be standard on the model of most new releases

Toyota optimal Drive, engineers have chosen to innovate and develop new technologies, rather than simply reducing the size of existing technology or Detune. Built on the company's legendary "Kaizen" tradition of optimization, Toyota has improved combustion efficiency, lower weight and friction reduction in power to create new engines that produce more energy, but They are more efficient and economical.

Vanguard, gasoline, diesel and transmission technology

Toyota Toyota best new concept will be available on most new models launched since the 2008 Paris Salon onwards. By 2009 this means progress RAV4 petrol and diesel engine technologies, as well as transfers of fuel:
Advanced technology of gasoline in the form of the 2.0-liter engine Valvematic
D-4D diesel engines update
S Multidrive and the latest 6-speed manual 6-speed automatic transmission

Reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of new and powerful 2.0-liter gasoline engine Valvematic

2009 Toyota RAV4 is now offered with an advanced new 2.0-liter Valvematic engine, which also comes with a new 6-speed manual transmission or transmission of the new S Multidrive. His performance gives 158 DIN hp (116kW), a 5% increase compared to the outgoing 2.0 liters VVT-i, 198 Nm at 4000 rpm and leader of the class that began CO2 emissions 177 g / km (S Multidrive transmission, 4WD).

In addition, customer choice in some markets, a Toyota RAV4 with 2WD version 2.0 liters engine Valvematic only the front wheels is being introduced. Ideal for those who do not need 4WD full capacity, its CO2 emissions will be initiated only 174 g / km (6-speed manual transmission).

Valvematic innovative technology

Valvematic is an innovative development of Toyota proved intelligent variable valve timing (VVT-i) integration of a new mechanism that continuously adjusts the intake valves in order to better control the flow of air. This advanced technology helps improve fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions, as well as power, torque and engine response.

Compared to conventional engines control air intake using a throttle valve, Valvematic adjusts the volume of air entering the combustion chamber of a continuous control of valve lift and timing. This ensures optimal performance based on engine speed, thus contributing to the Toyota RAV4 to achieve both high fuel efficiency and dynamic performance. Valvematic valve open longer than necessary to load condition, and therefore increases the rate of injection for optimal fuel combustion.

The technology takes Valvematic four tangible benefits:
Reducing emissions through a more efficient combustion process
Increasing fuel efficiency by reducing pumping losses
The higher increase in power through the inlet valve lift
Best answer engine by reducing air delays

New transmission Multidrive S

Multidrive S is a highly advanced Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). While conventional automatic or manual transmissions use multiple sets of gears and a clutch for different speeds, Toyota Multidrive S offers an infinite number of relationships with two cone shaped pulleys and a high resistance in V-shaped steel belt. With this agreement Multidrive S ratios change smoothly and seamlessly, almost eliminating shift shock.

S offers Multidrive ensure compliance:
It is fuel efficient and CO2. This is because the continuously variable transmission allows the engine to use more efficient engine speed region. The system uses low engine revolutions area gives good fuel economy and low noise.
Delivers powerful driving. Due to its variation with progression of gear ratios, you can also maintain the ideal relationship to maintain the engine in its optimal range of energy.
Incredibly soft and refined, owing to its perfect change of gear ratios.

For a more exciting journey, the driver simply by pressing the "sport" next to the gear lever. This will select a more responsive and able to maximize the relationship that best matches the intent of the driver.

For an even more active driving feel, the S Multidrive has a 7-speed sequential manual mode. The art of selection is done by the gear shift lever or paddle-located on each side of the wheel.

Drivers can also use the paddle-changes to temporarily override the automatic mode. This means that you are still in D-mode, but when preparing to overcome, for example, can cancel the D-mode temporarily to prepare for future conditions. The transmission dates back to the automatic mode by pressing the "+-palette for more than 1 second, when driving at a constant speed, when the constant acceleration over a given period of time, or when the vehicle is completely stopped .

For driving on a mountain regions "uphill" or "down" control logic has been that the selection of the best ratios for the Multidrive S. When driving up the cost will be selected to reduce the number of turns, and when driving down the rates to be selected to make optimum use of engine braking.

New 6-speed manual transmission 2.0-liter engine Valvematic

By setting a higher rank for the new gearbox, the engine speed is reduced, leading to better fuel economy, thereby reducing CO2 (2009 Toyota RAV4 now presents Gasoline a gearbox 6-speed instead of 5 - speed). Fuel economy is improved by reducing friction and drag on the transaxle. Here engineers added an oil separator to decrease the amount of oil removed, and specify the low-friction bearings and low viscosity oil.

Much of the engineering effort invested in improving the sense of change in the new gearbox, and is now one of the smoothest in the compact sport utility vehicle segment.

Despite having six gears, the gearbox is very compact. On the synchronization of Toyota engineers adopted a cradle of high-capacity, declining module teeth and added a corner (one for synchronization and one for the year).

Increased production and reduction of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of 2.2 liters D-4D diesel engines

Another example of optimum drive Toyota can be seen in the improvement of 2.2 liters RAV4 D-4D engine. Here, the challenge was to develop an engine that offers excellent performance and low fuel consumption and CO2.

The 2.2-liter D-4D has been redesigned to offer more torque at lower speeds leading to lower emissions, and now meets the Euro V standards when equipped with DPFs. The D-4D engine has been upgraded with new piezo injectors and offers an incredible pressure common rail 2000 bar.

The diesel engine is quieter with improved noise and vibration. The increase in engine noise is now the linear acceleration, giving a much better subjective impression of power to the driver and passengers.

The 2.2-liter D-4D 150 offers a good balance of power and economy. Power output is up 10% to 150 hp DIN (110kW) and torque has been increased on this engine by nearly 10% to 340 Nm between 2000 and 2800 rpm. Moreover, its broad range of media for maximum torque is available in most driving conditions, without the need for frequent gear changes. Its CO2 emissions began to manual transmission version of the class-leading 154 g / km when equipped with oxidation catalytic converter (COC) and 159 g / km when equipped with diesel particulate filter (DPF ).

One secret to the great efficiency of the 2.2 D-4D engine is the piezoelectric technology. Piezo injectors can inject larger volumes of fuel and are two times faster than the solenoid injectors. Toyota piezoelectric common rail system produces the greatest pressure injection systems from this type - 2000 bar - an increase of 300 bar from the previous 2.2 D-4D 135 liters. This state of the art is a central factor in achieving class-leading levels of power, torque and high fuel efficiency. In addition, Toyota RAV4 put at the top of the segment in terms of low NVH.

New 6-speed automatic transmission 2.2 liters D-4D 150

A brand new 6-speed automatic transmission is offered in the 2.2 D-4D 150. It offers a fast and smooth changeover response, while maintaining an impressive level of comfort by eliminating the severe disturbances change. It also features a sport mode that, once activated, select a more aggressive pattern of change, using the AI-Shift Control (Artificial Intelligence Control Shift).

This new automatic transmission also offers the excitement of sequential manual shifting. Moving in the M-position, the driver can change gear, either by changing the sequential shift lever or the palette changes to the steering wheel.

Sports 6-speed Direct Shift is a newly developed M-mode control for the new 6-speed automatic transmission. The M-mode provides a more direct sense and lock function is used from 2 to 6 gears wide range of gear ratios possible. This enables a sports car similar to a manual transmission. For more driving fun and feeling, the 6-speed Direct Shift Sports offers' blipping '. Blipping is achieved by controlling the injected volume of diesel and hydraulic clutch control and separation. This contributes significantly to the extremely rapid downshift time.

As Multidrive S, drivers can also use the paddle-changes to temporarily override the automatic mode and "uphill" or "down" control logic is also approved for driving in mountainous regions.

When 2.2 liters D-4D 150 is combined with 6-speed automatic transmission, Toyota offers only emissions control technology called Toyota D-CAT. Reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) at the same time. Home CO2 emissions to 186 g / km.

Proven 6-speed manual transmission for diesel engines

2009 Toyota RAV4 D-4D diesel engines can also be accompanied by a 6-speed manual transmission that offers smooth, quick and precise gear changes.

The transmission was developed to provide a wide range of gear, which is only possible with a 6-speed settings and the adoption of a tree and the length between each of the output shaft.

Toyota optimal unit

The Toyota Yaris 2009 model Toyota will benefit from the new Toyota Optimal concept, a range of technologies introduced in the 2008 Paris Salon to strengthen the management of Toyota in sustainable mobility.

Since the early years of Toyota, the target company has been contributing to the prosperity, the society of low-carbon through the production and sale of automobiles. To achieve this, Toyota R & D teams are continuously trying to develop more efficient powertrains sustainable and technological innovations. In fact, the fuel efficiency of Toyota cars increased by 28% over the past 10 years.

Hybrid technology has been playing a key role in this - more than 120,000 units have been sold in Europe (up septiembre'08). However, Toyota also wants to strengthen its position as a leader in conventional technology of power. Therefore, having established its leadership in the field of hybrid ® Hybrid Synergy Drive, Toyota has introduced Toyota Optimal Drive. The concept is simple - a better performance while lowering CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Built on the company's legendary "Kaizen" tradition of optimization, Toyota engineers have improved combustion efficiency, lower the engine / transmission of weight and reduce friction to produce new engines that provide more power However, at the same time, are more efficient and economical.

In short, the best unit of Toyota cars are great fun technologies to drive, while being kind to the planet.

1.33 liters advanced new dual VVT-i petrol engine with a reduction in emissions and fuel consumption

A breakthrough in the 2009 Toyota Yaris is a new 1.33 liters dual VVT-i petrol engine with innovative "Stop & Start technology.

The new engine is equipped with state of the art dual VVT-i (Variable valve timing intelligent), produces 74kW/101Hp power and has the world's highest compression of a gasoline engine (11.5:1). In line 4-cylinder gasoline engine also offers first class dynamic performance and a torque of 132Nm @ 4000rpm with a fuel consumption of just 5.1l/100km both the MMT and manual transmissions.

In total, the unit of Toyota advanced technologies, best 1.33-liter engine start and stop has resulted in a drop 21g CO2 emissions. Improvements were made to all areas of the engine and transmission and aerodynamics, ensuring quiet cabin and excellent environmental performance.

Advanced engineering has been applied throughout the new 1.33 liters of gasoline engine. Rationalization of Toyota engineers engine intake channel, used computer simulation to optimize the flow of air, all surfaces smoothened less turbulence and all rounded corners and edges inside the engine.

Cover resin intake manifold and cylinder head were taken to achieve substantial weight reduction. In addition, high rigidity aluminum crankcase (oil pan) is connected to the transaxle case, increasing the rigidity of the joint in the powertrain, and the achievement of the reduction of friction and noise. A new camshaft profile was also created friction and the weight was reduced by the valve art, and a maintenance-free hydraulic lash adjustment was developed.

All these improvements have solved the paradox of producing an engine that is smaller and lighter, but it offers more torque and better fuel economy.

Stop & Start technology

Stop and an ingenious new start is standard on the new engine of 1.33 liters of capacity to reduce fuel consumption and emissions even further.

While the Yaris is arrested, the system stops the engine when the lever is moved to the position of N and the clutch pedal is released, improving fuel economy. The engine restarts when to press the clutch and release the brake at the same time.

Restart immediately possible thanks to a gear mechanism permanently engaged. The starter motor of the transmission unit itself is not executed using a belt design - so there's no limit to the pair throughout the system, either hot or cold operation.

This breakthrough allows:
Reduce fuel consumption
Quiet, smooth and start immediately, improving comfort

Awarded 1.0 liters VVT-i petrol engine with a reduction in emissions and fuel consumption

As one of the lighter engine in the market today that offers major motor-specific power and torque. Toyota engineers have worked continuously to improve performance in the 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine and today the following improvements have been introduced:
A newly developed cutting system saves fuel during gear changes
Improvements in electronic fuel injection (EFI) management
The use of low-viscosity oil for engines less resistance
System of exhaust gas recirculation and cylinder block water jacket spacer are used for greater efficiency

In addition, low rolling resistance tires on all models and Toyota Yaris grades of gasoline (except S grade) to help lower fuel consumption and CO2 figures. All the above measures resulted in a reduction of CO2 by about 10% versus the outgoing model (from 127g/km to 115g/km).

Update 1.4 liters D-4D diesel engines

1.4 liters D-4D common rail diesel engine features the latest generation technology with an inter-cooled turbo. Power Output 66kW / 90hP is larger and offers maximum torque of 205Nm at 1800rpm. This represents an improvement of 15Nm to an even lower rpm compared with the previous 1.4 D-4D liters. Fuel consumption is only 4.1 litre/100km (4.2 liters with MMT) with the main class 110g CO2/km (111g CO2 / km with MMT) emissions from new DPF (Diesel special filter). This corresponds to an improvement in 9g CO2/km and 0.3l/100km compared with the previous 1.4 liters engine CCO.

The improvement in the figures of power and torque is the result of two major changes to the engine: First, following the integration of the latest common rail technology, the diesel engine with a high injection pressure of 160MPa and exceptionally a lower compression ratio. This translates into a minimum noise and vibration and allows for uniform combustion. It also contributes to very low NOx and particulate emissions.

Secondly, the piezo-electric injectors supply larger, more precise volumes of diesel to twice the speed of conventional fuel injectors. Due to its high operating speed, which can deliver multiple injections per combustion cycle. This is also a railway system and VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbine) turbocharger that lead to the improvement of approximately 10% of low-end torque, top-level fuel consumption and lower emissions.

Other improvements include an engine water jacket spacer, tensioning serpentine automatic "in the pan of oil pump oil, oil, low viscosity and reduced belt tension.

This unit is not only the more powerful 1.0 liter in the A-segment (68DIN hp/50kW), but also is a leader in the specific kind of torque (93Nm at 3600rpm). To ensure better management in urban conditions (where the constant acceleration and deceleration takes place), the development team wanted the unit to provide high levels of low to mid torque. This led to a complete optimization of the intake system, establishing a proper length and a collector for smaller diameter intake ports.

The number of cylinders (3) also leads to a higher availability of torque at low to mid-range, because there are less "metal" to move at low speeds.

Winner of "Engine of the Year" in 2007 and 2008

For the second consecutive year, Toyota's compact and lightweight 1.0 liters VVT-i engine won the overall honors in the Sub-1.0-liter category. The three-cylinder petrol, presented at Toyota Aygo, Yaris and iQ, was hailed by the judges of softness, without revolutions and a smart design.

Engine of the Year awards are decided by a distinguished group of 65 motor journalists from 32 countries worldwide. The 2008 winners were announced at a ceremony at Engine Expo 2008 in Stuttgart on May 7.

Compact and lightweight

With a tight turning radius (4.73m), the Toyota Aygo 2009 makes it easy to maneuver around the narrow streets of the city and take advantage of the tight parking spaces where other cars fit.

MacPherson Strut front suspension is derived from the Toyota Yaris. In the rear, Toyota's engineers specified a torsion beam, but the adoption of an inverted V profile - a solution that provides significant advantages in weight and torsional stiffness.

Aygos all come standard with power steering (EPS), which is also sensitive to the speed. In addition, the EPS is up 3% more fuel than a conventional hydraulic system.

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) improvements

True to Toyota's Kaizen philosophy of continuous optimization, Aygo engineers have worked on reducing NVH values in the car.

Improvements include sound-absorbing felt for AC-pillar and pillar trim interior. The package tray has also been improved with the use of thicker material and dense. Finally, the leaves of asphalt have been introduced under the carpet in the Toyota Aygo to reduce noise even further.

To reduce noise outside the engine is a pulley Damped added recently to reduce the vibrations of the engine bay.

Toyota Aygo excellent safety

The car features Toyota's own minimum system intrusion cabin (MICS), a security structure that effectively reduces the risk of serious injury during impact. This robust security structure is complemented with front, side and curtain (front and rear) airbags. Front airbags are standard on all models and side curtain airbags and available from the entry level.

Cost of ownership

The Toyota Aygo gets excellent ratings of insurance in Germany (15) and the UK (1E), reflecting its very reasonable cost of repair.

Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i also offers lower cumulative maintenance time after 100,000 kilometers: 4.2 hours a notable decrease. This means that the billing service will be kinder in comparison with their rivals.

For more quiet, offers each new Toyota Aygo with a 3-year (or 100,000 km - whichever comes first) pan-European security, something still unknown to any other competitor. The Toyota Aygo is also covered by a 12-year anti-rust warranty.

Excellent quality Toyota Czech plant

According to independent surveys, Toyota Aygo customers are among the most satisfied in the A-segment. This is due largely to the careful attention to building the car Toyota pays first.

In a joint operation with the Peugeot and Citroen, Toyota Aygo a manufacturing plant in Kolin, 60 kilometers east of the Czech Republic capital of Prague.

The plant is jointly owned by PSA Peugeot Citroën and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), and three small cars produced on a common platform: the Citroën C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo.

Established in March 2002, the plant is the result of a successful cooperation that allowed two manufacturers to combine their knowledge of product design, styling, production and supplier relationships, while learning each other's cultures business, technologies and processes.

This led to an exchange of specific know-how: PSA Peugeot Citroën knowledge of small cars in Europe and his experience in buying and TMC's ability in developing, manufacturing and production processes.

The aim of the production capacity of the plant from 340,000 vehicles per year, more or less equally divided between the Toyota Aygo, the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107.

2009 Toyota FT-EV Concept

Toyota announced that it will display the Toyota FT-EV concept on opening Media Day at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), confirming its plan to launch an urban commuter battery-electric vehicle (BEV) by 2012. This announcement, coupled with its compressed natural gas powered Camry Hybrid concept display at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, signal Toyota's intention to broaden the scope of its advanced alternative-fuel vehicle development.

"Now, more than ever, while we are so focused on the pressing issues of the moment, we cannot lose sight of our future," said Irv Miller, TMS Group Vice President, Environmental and Public Affairs. "Nowhere is this more important than with our industry's duty and commitment to provide true sustainable mobility with vehicles that significantly reduce fuel consumption, our carbon footprint and overall greenhouse gases."

The Toyota FT-EV concept shares its platform with the revolutionary-new Toyota iQ urban commuter vehicle. Already a huge hit in Japan, the iQ is lightweight and seats four passengers in comfort and security, while delivering exceptional mileage, sporty performance, unique refinements and a fun, youthful image.

Toyota FT-EV concept imagines an urban dweller, driving up to 50 miles between home, work and other forms of public transportation, such as high-speed rail. Although, for now, the Toyota FT-EV remains a pure concept, it represents a natural pairing of product strategies.

"Last summer's four-dollar-a-gallon gasoline was no anomaly. It was a brief glimpse of our future," said Miller. "We must address the inevitability of peak oil by developing vehicles powered by alternatives to liquid-oil fuel, as well as new concepts, like the iQ, that are lighter in weight and smaller in size. This kind of vehicle, electrified or not, is where our industry must focus its creativity."

Although BEVs and new smaller vehicles like the iQ will be a key component of Toyota's sustainable mobility strategy, the conventional gas-electric hybrid, like the all new third-generation Prius, is considered Toyota's long-term core powertrain technology.

Last year, Toyota announced that it planned to sell one million gas-electric hybrids per year sometime during the early 2010s. To accomplish this, Toyota will launch as many as 10 new hybrid models by the early 2010s, in various global markets. The new third-generation Toyota Prius and all new Lexus HS250h, both debuting in Detroit, are the first two examples of that effort.

Also, last year, Toyota announced that it would roll-out a large number of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) to global lease-fleet customers in 2010. That schedule has been moved up.

Beginning in late 2009, Toyota will start global delivery of 500 Prius PHVs powered by lithium-ion batteries. Of these initial vehicles, 150 will be placed with U.S. lease-fleet customers.

The first-generation lithium-ion batteries powering these PHVs will be built on an assembly line at Toyota's PEVE (Panasonic EV Energy Company, LTD) battery plant, a joint-venture production facility in which Toyota owns 60 percent equity. During its development, the new Prius was designed and engineered to package either the lithium-ion battery pack with plug-in capability, or the nickel-metal hydride battery for the conventional gas-electric system.

The 500 PHVs arriving globally in late 2009 will be used for market and engineering analysis. Lease-fleet customers will monitor the performance and durability of the first-generation lithium-ion battery, while offering real world feedback on how future customers might respond to the plug-in process.

"Future customers will have high expectations for these emerging technologies. This Prius PHV fleet program is a key first step in confirming how and when we might bring large numbers of plug-in hybrids to global markets," said Miller.

"Our business is no longer about simply building and selling cars and trucks. It is about finding solutions to mobility challenges today and being prepared for more daunting challenges in our very near future."
